I have taught courses on minority heath and health disparities at the Johns Hopkins University for many years. I had always lamented that there was no textbook for my course. This was not befitting the importance of the issues addressed in such classes.
Minority health will be central to public health, medicine, nursing, social work and public policy for the foreseeable future. As the U.S. becomes a “majority-minority” population, there will be an increased need for health and social service professionals to be knowledgeable about the ethnic groups we now call “minorities.” Yet, I am shocked by how few universities offer courses on minority health or health disparities. One day it occurred to me that if I didn’t do something to facilitate the development of minority health courses I was part of the problem, so I decided to do something about it.
Whether you adopt one of these books for your course or not, please feel free to contact me. I maintain a list of instructors teaching courses on minority health and health disparities. We share ideas on how to make our courses - and these books - better. If you’d like to join the list, go to the contact page and add your name and email address. If you have any questions or if you find an errors or omissions in the books, please go to the contact page and let me know.
